What is Memory ?

 Memory:-

Memory is a storage area where data and information can be stores.

Types of memory:-

Memory is classified into 2 types
  1.  Primary Memory
  2. Secondary Memory
      1. Primary Memory:

It refers to the computer’s main memory. Data will be stored temporarily in the primary memory. All data will be stored in chips.

Memory chips are of 2 types

  1. RAM chips
  2.  ROM chips
     1. RAM chips
  •  It stands for Random Access Memory
  • It holds information temporarily
  • Data stored in RAM will be lost if power is turned off
  •  Both reading and writing can take place in RAM
     2. ROM Chips
  •  It stands for Read Only Memory
  • Only reading can take place in ROM
  • It holds information permanently
  •  Data stored in ROM will not be lost
      2. Secondary Memory:-
It refers to the secondary storage devices. It is used to store data permanently.

Types of Storage devices :-

It is classified into 3 types
  1.  Optical disk
  2.  Magnetic Disk
  3.  Magnetic tapes
     1.Optical disk :-

An Optical disk is an electronic data storage medium that can be read and write using a low powered laser beam.
             Ex. CD, DVD

      2. Magnetic Disk:-

It is a thin circular metal plate coated on both sides with a magnetic material.
It is classified in to two types.
  1.  Floppy Disk
  2.  Hard Disk
    1. Floppy Disk:-
  •   It is a random storage medium
  •  Data is stored in tracks and sectors
  •  Each sector holds 512 bytes of data
     2. Hard Disk :-
  •  It is made up of metal plate coated magnetic material on both sides
  •  It is the direct access storage medium
  •  Disk pack moves simultaneously in same direction and at equal speed.
  •  Each disk consists of number of invisible concentric circles called tracks.
  •  The number of tracks and sectors on a disk is known as its format.

    3. Magnetic Tapes :-
  •  It is similar to cassette tapes and can be accessed serially.
  •  Data are stored in frames Each record on a tape is separated by blank spaces called inter record gaps.
